There are some recipes that become family recipes the very first time you make them… and this chocolate cake is definitely one of those.

In our home, we celebrate a little birthday every month for our baby girl until she turns one (mesversário 🇧🇷🤍)—a sweet Brazilian tradition that helps us slow down and celebrate these tiny, beautiful milestones.

This month called for chocolate cake 🍫

And honestly? This one was everything I wanted in a recipe as a busy mama:

✔️ Simple ingredients

✔️ Easy enough for toddlers to help

✔️ Soft and fluffy texture

✔️ No complicated steps

We topped ours with brigadeiro (because Brazilian roots 😭🤎), but you can truly make it your own with whipped cream, chocolate frosting, berries, or even just powdered sugar.

If you need a simple homemade cake recipe that feels special without being overwhelming… this is it.

The Best Easy Chocolate Cake Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar

  • 1¾ cups all-purpose flour

  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 1½ teaspoons baking powder

  • 2 teaspoons baking soda

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • 2 eggs

  • 1 cup milk

  • ½ cup coconut oil (or vegetable oil)

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1 cup boiling water

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Grease a cake pan or line it with parchment paper if desired.

Step 2: Mix the Wet Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine:

  • sugar

  • eggs

  • vanilla extract

Mix until combined.

Then add:

  • milk

  • coconut oil

Mix again until smooth.

Step 3: Add the Dry Ingredients

Add:

  • flour

  • cocoa powder

  • salt

Mix gently until combined.

Step 4: Add the Hot Water

Slowly pour in the boiling water and mix carefully.

The batter will look thinner than a regular cake batter—this is completely normal and helps create that soft texture.

Step 5: Add the Baking Agents Last

Mix in:

  • baking powder

  • baking soda

Stir gently until incorporated.

Step 6: Bake

Pour the batter into your prepared pan.

Bake for about 50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Allow the cake to cool before adding your favorite topping.

Topping Ideas

We used brigadeiro (a Brazilian chocolate topping 🤎), but this cake works beautifully with:

✨ Chocolate frosting

✨ Whipped cream

✨ Fresh berries

✨ Powdered sugar

✨ Vanilla icing
