✝️ Easter Sugar Cookies: A Sweet Tradition to Share the True Meaning With Your Kids

There’s something so special about slowing down in the kitchen with our little ones… especially during a season like Easter 🌸

This year, we made the simplest (and most joyful) sugar cookies together—rolling the dough, cutting out little animals, and of course, making crosses. My toddler was so excited, covered in flour, and fully in the moment… and honestly, so was I 🤍

But what made it even more meaningful was the conversation happening in between.

As we shaped the cookies, we talked about the real meaning of Easter—not just bunnies and sweets, but Jesus. His love. His sacrifice. The hope we have because of Him ✝️

It became more than baking… it became a memory, a teaching moment, and a tradition I want to keep for years.

If you’re looking for something simple, cozy, and meaningful to do with your kids this Easter, this is it 🌿

Easy Easter Sugar Cookies (Perfect for Little Hands)

These cookies are soft, buttery, and hold their shape beautifully—perfect for cookie cutters!

Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour (plus more for rolling)

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened

  • 3/4 cup sugar

  • 1 large egg (room temperature)

  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

  • 1/4 teaspoon almond extract (optional, but so good!)

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Mix the dry ingredients

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.

2. Cream butter and sugar

In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar together until light and creamy (about 2–3 minutes). This step makes your cookies soft and delicious!

3. Add the wet ingredients

Mix in the egg, vanilla, and almond extract until everything is well combined. Scrape down the sides as needed.

4. Combine everything

Slowly add the dry ingredients into the wet mixture. Mix just until combined—you’ll get a soft dough. If it feels too sticky, add a little extra flour (about 1 tablespoon).

5. Roll out the dough

Divide the dough in half. Roll each portion out to about 1/4-inch thickness on a lightly floured surface or parchment paper.

6. Chill

Stack the rolled dough, cover, and refrigerate for at least 2 hours. This helps the cookies keep their shape when baking.

7. Cut into shapes

Preheat your oven to 350°F (177°C).Use cookie cutters to create your favorite Easter shapes—we loved making crosses and little animals 🐑✝️

8. Bake

Place cookies on a lined baking sheet and bake for 11–12 minutes, until the edges are just lightly golden.

Let them cool before decorating (this part requires patience… especially with toddlers 😄).

Simple Decorating

We kept things very simple over here—and honestly, I loved it.

Instead of heavy icing, we:

  • Lightly brushed a thin layer of icing on top

  • Let my toddler help sprinkle decorations

It was less messy, less sugary, and still so fun ✨

You can use:

  • A simple glaze

  • Royal icing (if you prefer more detail)

  • Or even just sprinkles for a super easy option

A Gentle Easter Reminder

Mama, these are the moments your children will remember.

Not perfection. Not perfectly decorated cookies. But the way they felt.

The laughter. The flour on their hands. The stories you told.

Easter is such a beautiful opportunity to plant seeds of truth in their little hearts—to remind them that it’s all about Jesus and His love for us ✝️

🌿 Make It a Tradition

You can turn this into a simple yearly rhythm:

  • Bake cookies together

  • Talk about Jesus in a way they understand

  • Pray together

  • Keep it slow and meaningful

These small traditions shape their childhood more than we realize 🤍
