🌿 Why I Switched to Natural Deodorant (and the Simple Recipe I Use at Home)

If you’re starting your low-tox journey, one of the most important swaps you can make… is your deodorant.

I know — it sounds small. But this is something we use every single day, directly on our skin, in a sensitive area of the body. And once I learned more about it, I couldn’t ignore it anymore.

So I started making my own.

Simple, natural, and something I feel good using — even in this season of motherhood, where what we bring into our home really matters 🤍

🌿 Why Going Low-Tox with Deodorant Matters

Our skin absorbs so much of what we put on it.

Many conventional deodorants and antiperspirants contain ingredients like synthetic fragrance and aluminum compounds. While everyone is on their own journey with this, many families (myself included) choose to reduce exposure and look for simpler, more natural options.

Another thing no one really talks about…

When you switch to natural deodorant, your body may go through a detox phase.

Yes — that can mean stronger odor for a little while (I like to joke… you might smell like a teenager again 😂). But this is temporary, and for many, it’s just part of the transition as your body adjusts.

Give it time, and support your body with gentle, natural alternatives.

🌿 My Simple Natural Deodorant Recipe

This is the one I keep coming back to — easy, effective, and made with just a few ingredients.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup magnesium milk (magnesium hydroxide)

  • 1/4 cup filtered water

  • 80 drops of essential oils

Essential oils I used:

  • Bergamot (20 drops)

  • Lemon eucalyptus (20 drops)

  • Tea tree (20 drops)

  • Palmarosa (20 drops)

How to Make It

  1. In a glass measuring cup or container, add the magnesium milk.

  2. Pour in the water and gently mix.

  3. Add your essential oils.

  4. Stir everything well until fully combined.

  5. Pour into a clean glass spray or roll-on deodorant container.

And that’s it 🤍

A Few Gentle Tips

  • Shake before each use if needed

  • Start with fewer essential oils if you have sensitive skin

  • Give your body time to adjust if you’re transitioning from conventional deodorant

🌿 Why I Chose These Essential Oils

One of my favorite parts of making my own deodorant is being able to customize it with essential oils 🤍

Not just for the scent, but for the overall experience — something that feels fresh, clean, and supportive for everyday use.

Here’s why I chose each one in this blend:

🍋 Bergamot

Bergamot has a light, citrusy scent that feels uplifting and fresh.

I love using it in this blend because it helps create a clean, bright aroma without being overpowering — perfect for daily use.

🌿 Lemon Eucalyptus

This oil has a crisp, refreshing scent that adds a “clean” feeling to the blend.

It pairs beautifully with citrus oils and helps round out the freshness in a very natural way.

🌱 Tea Tree

Tea tree is one of those staple oils in a low-tox home.

It has a strong, clean aroma and is commonly used in personal care routines for its purifying properties — making it a great addition to a natural deodorant blend.

🌸 Palmarosa

Palmarosa has a soft, slightly floral scent that balances everything out.

It adds a gentle, fresh note to the blend and helps create a more rounded, pleasant aroma overall.

🌿 A Gentle Note on Essential Oils

When using essential oils, quality truly matters 🤍

Look for oils that are:

  • Pure

  • Carefully sourced

  • Free from synthetic additives

Always dilute properly and adjust amounts if you have sensitive skin or are new to using essential oils.

This blend is something I personally enjoy and use in my home, but everyone’s body is different — so feel free to adjust in a way that works best for you.

If you’d like to recreate this at home, I’ve made it simple for you 🤍
